Between December 31, 2003 and January 4, 2004, audiences in 33 North American centers - 21 major American cities, from Los Angeles to Boston, and 12 Canadian cities - will be swept off their feet by the entrancing melodies and inspiring rhythms of Johann Strauss Jr. and his contemporaries. Each concert also features songs and duets from popular Viennese operettas performed by leading European singers, as well as exhilarating waltzes and lively polkas danced by artists from prestigious international ballet companies. In total, Salute to Vienna each year employs over 900 professional musicians, singers and dancers for this event including, in select cities, world renowned artists such as tenor Jerry Hadley, conductors Karl Sollak and Christian Schulz, soprano Anna Maria Kaufmann, and members of the acclaimed Vienna Opera and Hungarian National Ballets. The renowned Salute to Vienna concert series combines glamour and elegance with fun and laughter to create sparkling events that appeal to young and old. It's the perfect way for families to usher in the New Year.
Vienna held its first Neujahrskonzert (New Year's Day concert) more than 60 years ago. It immediately became a sellout event with patrons vying for tickets. The arrival of television allowed the magic to be shared with a worldwide audience that now numbers in excess of a billion viewers. Meanwhile, live concerts, modeled on the Viennese original, sprung up in such major European capitals as London, Paris, Berlin, Budapest and Prague.
Canadian impresario and pianist Attila Glatz and his wife Marion established their concert production company in 1987, bringing with them from Central Europe a deep passion for the region's musical traditions. In 1995, inspired by childhood memories of Vienna's effervescent Neujahrskonzert and by the desire to share the tradition with North Americans, Attila Glatz Concert Productions launched Salute to Vienna. With its emphasis on quality and authenticity, the event soon became a runaway success and now delights as many as 80,000 people each year in concerts across the continent.
In 1999, Attila and Marion Glatz took Salute to Vienna back to its roots, returning to the world famous Musikverein in the "City of Dreams". They presented a "Strauss-Gershwin Gala" in honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of Johann Strauss, Jr. With the late American film icon Gregory Peck as narrator, this remarkable concert was a resounding success with the Viennese audience and has been broadcast throughout Europe, Japan and many other countries around the world. In 2003, the "Strauss-Gershwin Gala" will be broadcast on PBS in Detroit on Saturday, December 6th. The concert is also available for purchase on double CD, video and DVD.
Today Attila Glatz Concert Productions continues to promote the ever changing, live music scene. The company has presented such diverse performers as Plácido Domingo, who serves as Salute to Vienna's Musical Ambassador, the Boston Pops, and the new international dancing sensation Burn the Floor, and has an exclusive North American contract to present PBS concert sensation and one of Ireland's most popular singing exports, Daniel O'Donnell.
Salute to Vienna is officially recognized by the City of Vienna as an authentic Viennese New Year's celebration and has been endorsed by the President and Federal Chancellor of Austria, the President of the United States, the Governor General of Canada as well as many other leading dignitaries on both sides of the Atlantic.
